Chaucer's Cock Tale

The Canterbury Tale of chicken-coop chaos delivered with silver-screen style. Acting, music and physical theatre are shaken and stirred into Chaucer's classic "The Nun's Priest's Tale".

Dashing beau Chanticleer is gifted with good looks and the most beautiful voice in the world. He and his "perfect" wife Pertelot are the darlings of the 50s lifestyle glossy: Chanticleer entertains the world with cinematic and musical exploits while Pertelot provides a fine collection of baked goods! Indeed, Chanticleer's rise to international stardom is, and always has been, supported by a never faultering venner of marital bliss. Daun Russell is a vixen with other ideas! Pursuing Chanticleer to her own ends, she begins a hunting game that will cause feathers to fly and cake to crumble.

This fantastic tale is told using a direct translation of the original text. With dramaturgy by playwright and literary theorist Bernie C. Byrnes (RSC, Northern Stage), the words heard on stage remain true to Chaucer's original text. The visually spectacular Chaucer's Cock Tale blends together outrageously scenography and an all-new score by composer Jim Fowler.

"This is a potent cocktail, blending Chaucer and Noel Coward, song and dance with a fabulous Broadway musical-style soundtrack by composer Jim Fowler. Harper Ray, Lucinda Ryan and Helen McManamon perform with their inimitable style: they prance and preen with precise animalistic characterisation. While outrageously, grotesquely camp on one level, this is above all an intelligent re-working of Chaucer's morality tale dramatised with passion, humour and wit."
